Big Ideas for Growing Mathematicians

Big Ideas for Growing Mathematicians

This book and its predecessor, Big Ideas for Small Mathematicians, are meant to provide to children and adolescents glimpses of a “mathematician’s” version of mathematics. While the activities do not ignore the typical content of elementary- and middle-school mathematics classrooms, they focus more on the understanding of important ideas, rather than on procedural fluency. In fact, research has shown that procedural fluency will evolve along with deeper understanding. The activities provided foreground the important ideas in mathematics—ideas of dimension, space, infinity, movement and change, patterns and prediction—and some contain an element of surprise. They focus on the skills mathematicians often use to solve problems—skills of working collaboratively or talking mathematics together. They focus on exploring, extending, reasoning, and in some cases justifying. Many require the important skills of imagining and visualizing. In some activities the connection to the standard procedure is obvious; in others the focus is only on the conceptual idea. Some activities are just plain fun. I hope they will provide a glimpse of “real” mathematics to you and your students.
